Emergency & Inclement Weather Procedures
SIRENS
If you hear a siren, check your phone. The Purdue emergency notification text message will provide information and recommendations. If members of your tour do not wish to follow directions, please encourage them to do so, but always put your safety first.
It’s important to remember Purdue’s exterior warning sirens are tested at 11 a.m. on the first Saturday of each month, except during periods of adverse weather conditions. Let visitors know it’s only a test.
If you’re not sure what to do – call 911
1. Stay on the line with the dispatcher.
2. Provide the address of the building involved and your exact location. This is especially critical if you’rre calling from a cell phone.
3. Provide a thorough description of the incident to ensure that proper resources are dispatched.
4. Do not hang up until the dispatcher tells you to do so.
Be prepared for emergencies.
FRIGHTFUL WEATHER
We keep an eagle eye out on the weather and always err on the side of caution. However, if you’re already on a tour, then stay inside a building if it is raining or lightening. When the weather clears, work your way to the Admissions Office (if on an Academic Tour) or the Purdue Memorial Union (if on a Student Life Tour). If you can, have your group hop on a CityBus!
Plan B – Student Panel
We’ll find a room that can hold a student Q&A session that will replace the tour. If it’s the last Daily Visit in the morning or afternoon, the student panel will stay in the presentation room.
- Introductions
- Virtual tour (if you have access to a computer and screen) go to www.admissions.purdue.edu/virtualtour/ – take them through the stops they would have seen during the Student Life tour. Share the information you would normally.
- If there isn’t a computer available, have visitors take the Purdue brochure out of the bag and talk through the student life pages.
- Open it up for questions.
UMBRELLAS
Located inside the office next to the Welcome Center, where the iPad chargers are kept, in a black bin. If umbrellas are wet, place them unwrapped inside the bin so they can dry.
Always collect our umbrellas from families at the end of each tour, and place them in the designated areas.
Give one per family.
Upon arrival to SCHL 112, collect umbrellas and place in umbrella cart to use on Student Life tour.
Keep about 25 at Welcome Center and the rest (75) in Schelman.
